Abstract
In the Museum of Arts and Craft in Budapest all kinds of leather objects are treated. Mrs. Szilvia Maros and Mrs. Katalin Nagy helped in restoring leather bindings and in preparing the exhibition for this congress. The opinion is that restorations and replacement of missing parts should not always be carried out with the original materials since the old original parts have changed with time, sometimes losing the natural fiber structure. Conservation methods and formulas: for alum tanned leather: retanning with alum; for leather conservation: fatty alcohols or their sulfonate derivatives; for desiccated leather, which has lost its fiber structure: butyric acid buffered with calcium lactate; lime residues in leather in connection with sulphurous acid anhydride in the city air produce plaster; metal bosses are isolated with calaton solution; for gluing leather, silicone glue Elastosil 07 produced by the Wacker company; for completing missing leather parts, cement of: polyvinyl-acetate emulsion (LEIFA), filling loading: asbestos flakes, colouring: earth colour, plasticizer: dibutylphthalate; plasticizer for leather: 1) brush with 50% glycerine, 2) 15% aqueous emulsion - 2 parts fatty alcohol sulphonate, 1 part lanoline. Precepts for conservation of metal bosses on books, textiles, ivory and mother of pearl are also discussed. -- AATA
