Abstract
Scratches on pottery can provide valuable evidence of how the specimen was originally used. To preserve this evidence the specimens should be cleaned by methods that will not affect the slip or the burnish or cause fresh scratches. Ultrasonic baths, trisodium phosphate and the use of toothbrushes have destroyed old abrasions in some wares. -- AATA
