Abstract
Nine types of beads were discovered in the Pre-Achemenian site at Ghalekuti in Iran. The types are classified as follows: Egyptian faience, agate, glass, fossil wood (possibly jet), quartz, calcite, pyrite, aragonite, and turquoise. Heavy weathering is present on all types. The quartz beads appear to have been glazed while the glass beads were commonly made by winding glass rod around a cylindrical core. Specific gravity, spectrographic analysis, wet analysis (where possible), and microscopic examination were all performed. The glass, while having a typical soda-lime composition, has a high magnesium content, which indicates that dolomite may have been used as a raw material. Photomicrographs of thin sections of the faience beads are also shown. -- AATA
