L'Heure embrasée, a masterpiece of the Belgian neo-impressionist, Theodor van Rysselberghe, painted in 1897, was acquired by the Museum für Kunst und Kunstgewerbe in Weimar in 1921/1922. It was so badly damaged in a bomb-attack in 1945 that it was then considered to be totally destroyed. Splinters penetrated this unusually large painting (228 x 329 cm.) in about 400 places. In 1965/66 it was restored in the Werkstatt der Staatlichen Kunstsammlung Weimar and relined with a wax-resin compound. This resulted in a few technical problems, which were solved by the inclusion of a binding marble sheet over a large surface area and by the preparation of a special cradle-frame. -- AATA
