Abstract
In planning the restoration of the facades and the interior of the Benedictine church at the Abbey of Melk, with its high Baroque decoration, a special program of photogrammetric documentation was set up for use by the restorers. The facades were recorded by photogrammetry for examination of plaster and color, and so were the different altars for the documentation of restoration procedures. All data concerning the curved inner surface of the dome, painted al fresco, were gathered in a database. The survey was done by using a 1 square meter grid system by means of which the fresco painted by Rottmayr in 1716 could be reconstructed authentically without distortion by normal photography from below the 40 meter-high vault.
