Abstract
Provides an overview of the history, development, function, and staff of Italy's Central Institute for Restoration in Rome founded in 1939. Describes the kinds of restoration institutes in Italy prior to the its formation. Highlights role played by the institute following the bombardments of WWII and the flooding in Florence in the 1960s. Its linkage to ICOM is discussed as well as its educational role. Funding is discussed. Recent projects include Giotto's frescoes in Assisi, the National Gallery in Dublin, the Cihil Sutun Palace in Iran, and so on.
