Over a period of 20 years, the Victoria and Albert Museum has developed and refined a method for the treatment of polychrome stone. Heavily salt-contaminated stone sculptures undergo preconsolidation of the paint surface (poly(vinyl alcohol) is often used as the consolidant), preconsolidation of the stone with low-viscosity resins, removal of salts using poultices, cleaning (an Airbrasive machine or Cavitron is sometimes used under magnification), and deep consolidation of the stone with an acrylic-silane consolidant. A case study discusses the application of this treatment method to a sculpture removed from the late 14th century Bristol High Cross.
