Abstract
In Part I, the authors were commissioned by the New York Landmarks Conservancy to develop a procedure for the consolidation of unstable paint on stained glass windows. The consolidative treatment chosen was a two-part system involving the use of a silane coupling agent (Union Carbide A-1100) and an epoxy resin (Ablebond 342-1). The silane is intended as an adhesion promoter and wetting agent for the epoxy resin that is applied in the second step of the process. In Part II, the authors discuss the copper foil technique used by the Greenland Studio, Inc., New York, to join breaks in stained glass. The procedure is similar to that used in the late 19th century in the manufacture of stained glass windows and lamps in the United States, particularly by the Tiffany Company.
