Abstract
Seventeen mixtures based on a Thessalian clay with or without added MnO2, A12O3, Fe2O3, or CaO were fired between 600 and 1000°C (at one-hundred degree intervals). Fired in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, the clays were then analyzed by x-ray diffraction. Principal conclusions are that manganese-black decorated pottery was fired in oxidizing or weakly reducing atmospheres, and that the dissociation temperature of calcite is very dependent on furnace atmosphere. Thus any attempt to estimate firing temperatures on the basis of phase assemblages of calcareous ceramics will be subject to significant potential errors. See also 21-850. -- AATA
