Focusing upon the development of English glass furnaces that date to the 16th and 17th centuries, this article discusses major changes of England's glass manufacturing, including: 1) the supersession of England's rectangular melting furnaces by the winged furnaces of the immigrants from continental Europe; 2) the development of using mineral fuel; and 3) the appearance of the conical superstructure during the 17th century. References to several excavated furnace sites are examined to explain the evolution of English glass furnaces. -- AATA
