Desert varnish, produced by wind action in desert conditions, can be dated by cation ratios, particularly measuring the potassium and calcium to titanium ratios as the calcium and potassium are selectively leached from the rock surface. Analysis was performed by particle induced x-ray excitation (PIXIE) and compared to radiocarbon dates over periods from 1,000-40,000 years ago. -- AATA
