Abstract
The authors adapted a method for determining the ages of fossils using racemization of isoleucine and other protein amino acids. By the fast racemization of amino acids, followed by ion exchange column chromatography separation with a chiral silica gel layer, the ages of bones between 5,000 and 50,000 years old could be determined with an error of ± 5% for for D-allo-isoleucine and ± 15% for other amino acids. A proposal is made for dating bone samples with an approximate age of 1,000 years, with possible application of amino acids with sulfur. An overview of the literature is included.
