Abstract
Thermal dehydration study of some paramagnetic Tutton salts, Co(KSO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>.6H<sub>2</sub>O, Cu(KSO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>.6H<sub>2</sub>O, and Cu(NH<sub>4</sub>SeO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>.6H<sub>2</sub>O, revealed the formation of lower hydrates, viz. Co(KSO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>.2H< sub>2</sub>O, Cu(KSO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>.2H<sub>2</sub>O, and Cu(NH<sub>4</sub>SeO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>.2H<sub>2</sub>O. Powder photographs of these phases have been indexed by the methods of Ito and Lipson. Co(KSO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>.2H<sub>2</sub>O has been found to be monoclinic with cell dimensions a=7.31, b=13.25, c= 5.68 A, beta=97°35´, and space group P2<sub>1</sub>/a. The other two dihydrates are orthorhombic with cell-dimensions a=14.58, b=11.90, c=10.50 A for Cu(KSO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>.2H<sub>2</sub>O and a= 14.83, b=12.39, c=10.31A for Cu(NH<sub>4</sub>SeO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>.2H<sub>2</sub>O. The probable space groups in both cases are Pmn2<sub>1</sub> or Pmnm. The probable natures of the structures of these dihydrates are discussed.
