The Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller is situated in the middle of woods at a considerable distance from the nearest village. Therefore, in its disaster plan, the museum has developed special arrangements with municipal organizations such as police, fire brigade and (para)medical services. The response to an incident, a starting disaster, should work like a chain reaction, taking place automatically. The disaster plan must have been developed in such a way that this reaction cannot be stopped. For this purpose frequent contacts with the above-mentioned external organization are necessary. The agreement with the fire brigade includes: training together, with in the museum as well as on the premises of the brigade, early notice in case of a forest-fire in the vicinity, a special access road for the firemen and training/instruction of museum employees. For ambulances a special access road has been arranged as well. The chauffeurs have been instructed about the names and positions of the entrances of the building, in order to prevent loss of precious minutes. The contacts with the police have led to the appointment of a number of museum employees as museum police. They had to follow special courses in the State Police School. They now have certain competences and the right equipment to participate in the communication system of the police and in the use of relevant databases (e.g. car owners via number plates). In general, the experience of the museum in its cooperation with the municipal organizations is quite positive.
