The development and utilization of plant epidermis collections is becoming more frequent in Applied Biology Units. However, most of this material is scattered and conserved in inadequate conditions. The starting point for its preparation is the leaves of each species, from which, by scraping or cutting, the cuticle epodermis is removed. Then, the little pieces of epidermis are placed on a slide. Pigments and starch, if present, are removed with Hertwig solution and the preparation is made permanent with Hoyer solution. These preparations are sensitive to environmental changes, therefore, the storage area must maintain conditions similar to those of other scientific collections. There are currently different collections, mainly of Monocotyledon plants from mountainous areas, which are used most frequently to help in identifying plant remains in studies of herbivore diet.
