Abstract
The deterioration of contemporary paintings caused by experimentation in painting techniques and materials in the 20th century is discussed. Specific examples of various artists' techniques and resulting problems -- structural, aesthetic and philosophical -- are discussed. Conservators consulted cite examples of problems and the issues inherent in specific treatments. There is some discussion of new technologies and materials being developed to meet the requirements of contemporary paintings. -- AATA
