Abstract
This report assembles a variety of experimental data relating to the effect of immersing cellulose materials in liquids. It is shown that the immersion liquids can, in varying degrees, alter the strength and deformation properties of paper and of regenerated cellulose filaments by affecting the strength of intrafiber and interfiber bonds and by swelling of the fibers. Theimmersion experiments have been extended to demonstrate the shrinkage and other changes that occur during solvent exchange, the retention of liquids by entrapment, and the improvement of pulp quality by solvent action. Evidence is presented in support of the idea that bonding in paper may not be due solely to hydrogen bonds; bonds may be formed by drying paper from hydrocarbon liquids. The suggestion that the swelling of fibers and paper is related to the release of intemal stresses introduced into the paper during drying is supported by some of the data but other effects are involved. The factors that determine the effectiveness of the immersion liquid include its hydrogen bonding properties and the existence of intermolecular forces that are summed up in the cohesive energy density. The important role of molecular size and other steric factors is demonstrated. -- AATA
