The authors dampened the papers into 27-31% of water content and hammered the pile of the papers, which was covered with thick leathers. After separating the sheets, some of their physical properties were measured. Apparent density and smoothness increased; and breaking strength, air penneability, whiteness and water absorption degree were lowered. The process was also compared with the plate calendering process in which the density and the smoothness changed similarly, but the extent of water absorption and air permeability was not changed much. The running of Chinese ink on the hammered paper was tested.
