Abstract
In the quoted article the author emphasizes how women's dress changed from the tournure and the cul de Paris to the * 2narrow dress*1 of the 20th century. In the two decades of the 19th century changes in fashion were determined by the Emperor court and high society. Fashion magazines and the daily press provided background material on the 24 exhibited dresses from museums and private collections. Reports on court and high society festivals document the struggle that pitted physicians and artists against a society that forced women into corsets and then liberated them from such restrictions while men's dress reflected no such dramatic changes. -- AATA
