Because of their abundance and wide geographical distribution, so-called Massaliete (or from Marseille) amphorae fragments provide an excellent source of information on patterns of trade around Marseille during the First and Second Iron Ages. The author conducted petrographic studies (using optical microscopy and x-ray diffraction) on about 100 fragments already typologically defined and whose Marseille origin appeared proven. The results of the study are presented in this article. The fragments could be divided into three large groups, arranged into subgroups, and the source of production was then determined by comparison with available geological data from sites deemed likely, between Nice and Hyères along the Mediterranean. The study gives renewed importance to Marseille as a commercial center. -- AATA
