While recognizing the dangers of light, the author points out that the interests of the viewer must be considered when light levels are reduced. Recommended light levels below 150 lux are inadequate for certain types of critical viewing. Furthermore, the tendency to have low levels of illumination on the warm side can distort color relationships. The author stresses the importance of reduced light exposure for water colors and similar objects but feels that the need for restrictions on oil paintings is not as critical as some have suggested.
