In 1953 a new building was planned for the Institute of Archaeology, London University, and storage for its teaching collections of environmental archaeology and archaeological finds was to be included. The essential requirements were: a unified system of standard tray suitable for all except the largest items, trays should be interchangeable, dust proof yet easily accessible, not too heavy to remove, capable of simple division into compartments, flexible for both permanent and temporary storage and whole system capable of installation in any room and capable ofexpansion or removal. No proprietary equipment fulfilled the requirements so a system was designed. Drawer size of internal diameter 1 foot 53/4 inches x 1 foot 7R5 inches from back to front and 5 inches deep was formulated. For large items such as skeletons, a standardized loose shelf which could be incorporated into cupboard units was included. The article gives construction details for the system.
