Abstract
This article was written in response to the article by Genard published several months earlier (197). The authors questioned his assumption that the particular spectral emission lines in the far U. V. are especially harmful to art objects. They also criticized Genard's quantitative interpretation of the spectrographs of a variety of light sources because of the absence of more specific data such as the absolute energy of each source. In order to test the danger of U.V. Radiation from fluorescent bulbs, six relatively fugitive dyestuffs were exposed to a warm-white fluorescent lamp (considered by Genard to be among the most harmful) directly, with a 3 mm thick window glass between them, and with a special glass filtering out the U.V. Below 370 nm. After 36, 000 foot-candle hours of exposure, there was considerable fading, but it was the same under all three conditions. The authors concluded that extreme U.V. Radiation from fluorescent lamps does not accelerate fading, and therefore fluorescent lamps are safe for museum use.
