The concept of reversibility is reviewed and found to have been an extremely valuable guideline in the development of the conservation profession. Though still useful as a reference point, reversibility has become one of the yardsticks conservators use to evaluate treatments. In practice, the meaning of the concept of reversibility, but not its name, seems to be changing. The present concept is acceptable conservation treatments should provide overwhelming benefit at the cost of minimal damage to the object.
