The issue of appropriateness of coatings and how surfaces are changed when a coating is applied or removed is a central concern for conservators working on 19th and 20th century sculpture. Following the artist's intent should be a high priority even though work may go beyond traditional conservation. The author's experience with outdoor sculptures by Henry Moore has resulted in a cautious approach applying one protective coating uniformly to all sculptures.
