Abstract
A drop of filtered (No.4 Whatman) 5% (w/v) 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine)solution in 2N acetic acid onto 1-cm samples of paper, then heated for 15 min at 110° C on a microscope hot stage. Differential interference contrast microscope and scanning electron microscope were used to study the papers. The pH of the paper affected the alum distribution. The stain is capable of detecting alum in concentrations of 0.5%. -- AATA
