Two <i>chinkin shitenno-zo</i> doors were found recently in Ryuzo-ji, Yamaguchi prefecture. Each door is divided into two by bolts (crosspieces). The front surface is of black <irushi</i> and the back surface of vermilion <irushi</i>. There is a picture of the Four Devas in the front and that of flowers in a vase in the back, both in <i>chinkin</i>. There were many insect damages and rot decay. Some parts were missing, and the doors were on the verge of disruption. The doors were installed in an exhibition-storage case after having been worked on for conservation. Actual conservation treatment was as follows: 1) For the wooden parts, lost bolts and boards were supplemented by new wood (Japanese cypress), broken bolts were joined with an acrylic resin adhesive, and missing parts of bolts and tenon were supplemented by new wood (Japanese cypress) and assembled. 2) For the <irushi</i> parts, the foundation layers which had been damaged were consolidated by impregnation with an acrylic resin solution (5% Paraloid B-72 in xylene). -- AATA
