Abstract
Review briefly discusses how paper is made transparent (impregnation, chemical treatment, or mechanical treatment) and the kinds of damage and disintegration which such treatments provoke. Methods used from 1969 until 1982 for the reinforcement of brittle and deteriorated transparent paper are assessed: impregnation, coating, lamination, and backing. Lamination in a heat press is preferable to the local application of heat; spray application of adhesives is preferable to brush application; solvent-activated adhesives are preferable to aqueous or thermoplastic adhesives; paper supports are preferable to synthetic material supports.
