Today conservators use three basic forms: shading and hatching, use of different colors, and use of symbols (in rare cases). Not one of these methods is predominant or unified; That is why legends are still used for explanation. The fundamental reason for the unified use of graphic symbols is that graphic documentation can be understood without instructions-such as legends. Graphic symbols which would satisfy at least some of these requirements should be proposed.
