True and flocked velvets react differently from other fabrics both to wear and to care procedures. The length of the pile, its density and its construction, all have a direct bearing on how the velvet reacts during use and cleaning. Once the pile is flattened, it exhibits a change in light reflectance. The anchor of the pile may be broken, allowing fibers to pull out. W weave velvets are more stable than V weave velvets. Stains can mat or distort the pile permanently. Moisture may affect the finish on the pile, causing it to flatten and distort permanently. Some resin finishes are moisture sensitive.
