The term moiré describes several methods by which a design is affected on the surface of a fabric. In bar moiré, rows of wavy designs are produced mechanically using moisture, heat and pressure. In scratch moiré, another mechanical method, the yarns are deflected into various simple designs. In the H-process, chemical and mechanical processes may result in a larger, more complicated design. In printed moiré, a fabric is roller-printed giving wavy designs in rows as in bar moiré. Moiré designs may be found on cotton, silk, rayon, acetate, nylon and other synthetics. Cotton or thermoplastic fibers with resin finishes may withstand laundering, wetcleaning and drycleaning. Suggestions are given for drycleaning, spotting, finishing and wetcleaning moiré.
