Taffeta is a plain-weave fabric. Because the filler yarn is often heavier than the warp yarn, the fabric appears ribbed. Its tight weave aids high luster, stiffness and rustle. Taffeta can be made of silk, rayon, nylon, acetate, polyester or combinations. Very lightweight taffetas are often made of silk. Sizings or finishes are often applied to taffetas.
