Abstract
Rediscovery in Rossendale Museum of a stuffed tiger and large snake, realized to be part of a lot sold at Bullock's sale in 1819 -- of 32,000 only a few specimens remain; they included specimens from Cook's voyages (1768-1780). Though considered a showman and entrepreneur, Bullock's collection was valuable and scientifically important. Methods in taxidermy were very similar to those practiced today but with the addition of arsenical and mercuric compounds Arsenic was a French idea ca. 1800. The items have survived well -- possibly the addition of the poisons have counteracted the ravages of moth and beetle; modern specimens may not survive so long. -- AATA
