Abstract
Methods were developed and evaluated for the removal of aged oily stains from textiles which were dyed with natural dyes. Oily stains on fabrics become more difficult to remove with aging because unsaturated oils chemically bond with fibers during the oil oxidation process. Oxidation was promoted by exposure to ultraviolet light in a ventilated chamber. The oxidation level of olive oil on the fabric was monitored by the Thiobarbituric Acid Test. Samples were aged until no further oxidation occurred over time. The removal of olive oil and natural soil of both high and low clay content from wool and cotton fabrics was then evaluated in this project. Both fabrics were dyed with madder, a natural dye commonly encountered on historic textiles. Two stain removal methods were chosen because they are suitable for use on delicate museum textiles. They are drycleaning solvent excited by ultrasound, and spotting using drycleaning solvent with a vacuum system. The effectiveness of the removal methods was evaluated by instrumentally-determined measures. The Stain Removal Index uses color measurement data (L,a,b values) to evaluate stain removal on a scale that is easily understood. This method closely corresponds to visual perception. The Kubelka-Munk relationship is used to measure mass transfer of soil in the cleaning process. The quality of stain removal is evaluated for the cleaning methods.
