Abstract
Discusses the role of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Nigeria, through the Natural History Museum. The activity of the Natural History Museum is largely dependent on the availability of adequate laboratory facilities and storage systems, as well as management personnel. Problems that constrain the preservation and conservation of forests and wildlife species are economic, climatic, and biological. The roles of other institutions, such as the Federal Environmental Protection Agency, the Natural Resources Conservation Council, the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, and the University Natural History Museum, whose activities are concerned with the protection, preservation, and conservation of the natural environment, are also discussed. The author strives to establish linkages between these institutions and the museum and highlights the problems facing natural history museums in view of environmental changes and the prospects and challenges of the future in Nigeria.
