Abstract
The origins of calcium oxalate films are investigated in connection with the finishing techniques reported in the ancient books of sculpture. If the calcium oxalate films are the consequence of an old surface treatment of the marble (which may or may not be true), the connection will be found in the substances used for polire (cleaning) and lustrare(polishing).
