Abstract
Home life in the 18th and 19th centuries in the United Kingdom is examined relative to the development of the hosiery industry. Houses in the East Midlands, London, and Shepshed were adapted to accommodate knitting frames for a cottage industry. Workplaces were often kept separate from living quarters and eventually became completely disassociated from the house as frames grew larger.
