Abstract
Extraction of termiticidal substances was attempted with pentane, acetone, and acetone-hexane-water as solvents. Comparisons were made of the survival of <i>Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki on unextracted sawdusts, solvent-extracted sawdusts, and the extracts. Success in extracting antitermitic substances varied with woods and solvents. No termites survived on 18 unextracted sawdusts, and less than 50 percent survived on the other 5. Mean survival was 7 percent for unextracted sawdusts and 44 percent for extracted. Termites could not survive on absorbent paper pads treated with extracts from 14 woods. The abnormal protozoan populations of some surviving termites indicated that the insects were starving and that certain woods were repellent rather than toxic.
