Abstract
The process of paper deterioration caused by sulfur dioxide is reviewed and a description is given of a simple test using strips of filter paper impregnated with dark brown colloidal manganese dioxide which become bleached in the presence of atmospheric sulfur dioxide. The rate of bleaching is proportional to the amount of sulfur dioxide to which the strips are exposed. Complete instructions are provided for making and using the strips.
