Abstract
The close parallelism of the development of misericord and manuscript decoration is demonstrated. The earliest misericords, like the MS initials, used foliage (with or without dragons) and there followed an era of playful subjects, as in the marginal drawings. However, the carvers used very diverse sources -- sketchbooks, ivories, or whatever lay to hand. -- AATA
