Abstract
Lime interment is a burial custom found only in Mallorca in the ancient Mediterranean, and its origin is not well understood. Radiocarbon dates indicate that the custom originated in the 5th-6th century B.C., possibly through Phoenician contact. Both lime carbonates and incorporated charcoals were dated; where these two materials were found associated the close agreement in date indicates the reliability of radiocarbon dating of lime carbonates. Some anomalous results were obtained, however, and the contamination problem by older carbonate material is discussed. -- AATA
