Abstract
The author outlines a basic introduction to conservation contracting, targeting conservators starting new businesses as well as established private conservators. Although a lawyer is still strongly recommended, suggestions are made as to how to write a better contract. The author emphasizes the need to write your own contract to keep the contractor in charge. Twenty-three different subject areas or information frequently found in conservation contracts are listed and outlined in detail. In the conclusion, the AIC Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice is mentioned as being useful when consulting with a lawyer. The advantages of having a good contract are described and further sources of help in writing a contract are mentioned.
