Abstract
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is an employee's first line of defense against hazards that cannot be engineered out of the workplace. PPE does not eliminate the hazard, but assists in protecting against the hazard. When PPE fails, is not worn properly, or is misused, unnecessary exposures to the hazard, resulting in severe injury or death, may occur. PPE must not be altered of removed while in the hazard area. This pamphlet briefly outlines several types of commonly used PPE that can protect the head, eyes, respiratory system, ears, body, arms, hands, and feet. PPE includes clothing, gloves, respirators, glasses, shoes, hats, and related accessories designed to provide protection against hazards found in the workplace.
