Abstract
Common hazards to the lungs include harmful dusts, fumes, mists, smokes, gases, and vapors. Overexposure to respiratory hazards are often difficult to detect and may cause lung impairment, other diseases, and sometimes cancer. The primary methods to remove workplace air contaminants are product substitution or engineering controls, such as ventilation. When these control techniques are not feasible or while permanent controls are being installed or repaired, respirators must be used. Respirators are important personal protective equipment that protect lungs from airborne hazardous substances. Specifically, it is a device that fits over an individual's nose and mouth and maintains a supply of breathable air. Respirators must be properly selected and maintained to protect against specific chemical hazards. In addition, the users must be trained and fitted for the proper respirator type. This pamphlet describes the required elements of an effective respiratory protection program (RPP).
