There is a current interest in developing new wool carpet products with a felted look as the central theme. The continuing interest in long pile tufted carpets of the Berber type has led to the development of coarse gauges such as 3/8”, 5/32” and 5/8”, which need specialized yarns as heavy as Nm 0.2. Apart from the coarse gauges, there has been a trend from shags to semi-shags, using chunky yarns with good tuft definition. In such constructions this tuft definition can be achieved with felted yarns. Even in loop pile constructions, softly twisted yarns can be felted advantageously to reduce fibre shedding. In addition, felting provides good yarn roundness, a high degree of set especially with coarse low twist yarns, and reduces fibre shedding in all types of carpet construction. Modern carpet yarn felting techniques are examined in this paper. These include agueous felting, solvent felting and the continuous yarn felting methods currentily being developed by TNO/IWS, and Baker, Perkins, Jaxon Ltd. Factors such as wool used, yarn spinning systems, felting conditions etc are briefly examined and their effects discussed.
