Abstract
In light of the evidence presented, and the experience gained in this project, the knit-de-knit texture in carpet is versatile and commercially viable. A range of textures can be made from compact type with curly surface texture to frieze-like appearance. The tufting operation of these carpets presents no problems at all, and their finishing is simple and without the final shearing or de-fuzzing operation. Amongst the features of this process, the following should be mentioned: 1. Direct knitting from large twister bobbins into knitted hose; 2. Knock-off stop motion on the knitting machine may be installed in order to measure exact length of yarn wound on to tufting packages; 3. The correct size of the hose roll (i.e. diameter) can be made for any autoclave in use, to ensure maximum production efficiency; 4. The yarn can be directly unraveled from hose into tufting packages of any desired length or weight; 5. Comparatively cheap and simple equipment is required to establish the production of knit-to-knit yarn; 6. This process creates a cheap route for production of frieze-like textures; 7. Compared with conventional frieze-type yarns, this process (a) eliminates hanking, dyeing, back-winding, tumbling, steaming and re-winding, (b) eliminates lot size, handling and water setting problems.
