Abstract
Discusses American colonial printers' early dependency on imported presses, type, and paper. Subsequent restrictions of supplies and equipment during the Revolutionary War spawned the development of American made materials and methods. The author discusses early 19th-century printers and their contribution to the technological advancement of American printing, as well as competition with English inventions. A review of late 19th-century mechanization of processes, advances in equipment techniques, and materials concludes the article -- AATA
