A discussion of the conflicting information concerning the nature, causes and removal of foxing stains on paper. The use of energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence analysis shows the presence of copper and iron in papers dated 1818 and 1940. With the scanning electron microscope growths of fungi are noticed from books dating from 1842 to 1919, the reduction of foxing spots is discussed.
