Abstract
Based on the exhibition Three centuries of wall-papers at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, 1967. Catalog contains 600 original wallpapers published between 1800 and 1850 by French manufactories. This book was conceived as a contribution to the study of the decorative grammar of the 19th century. The documents, all illustrated, were chosen from the three public collections of wallpapers: Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, Musée de l'Impression sur Etoffes, Mulhouse and Bibliothèque Forney, Paris. Every kind of wallpaper is represented except for panoramic decorations: repeat designs, borders, friezes, above-doors, etc.... J. P. Seguin's historical introduction on the evolution of the art of wallpaper from its origins to 1850. Texts on the manufacturing techniques, the role of the draftsman, and the development of the motifs by O. Nouvel. An appendix reprints Spoerlin's text on the manufacture of irisé paper. In the case of each document a technical note provides names of the draftsman and the manufacturer, date, manufacturing procedures, dimensions, and covers its relationship to the design. -- AATA
