Abstract
Argues that the illustrations of the Psalter of Henry of Blois (Winchester Psalter) (middle of the 12 century; MS Cotton Nero C.IV, British Library, London) were planned and partially executed as a series of tinted drawings. Shortly thereafter they were subjected to a series of alterations and additions, including painted figures and backgrounds, inscriptions in Norman French, heavy outlines in black ink, and gilding of hems of garments, crowns and many borders. These additions, particularly the backgrounds are in a poor state of preservation. The majority of tinted drawings are much closer to their original appearance than previously believed. -- AATA
